Lake Tahoe: The Largest Alpine Lake in North America

So many reasons to go!

Lake Tahoe is a two million year old freshwater lake, carved by glaciers during the Ice Age. It is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains and is massive, at a length of 21.75 miles, 191.6 square miles total.

Straddling the California/Nevada state line, it is the largest alpine lake in North America, and at a depth of 1,645 ft., it is the second deepest in the U.S., the first being Crater Lake in Oregon.

Lake Tahoe is best known for its beaches and ski resorts and is a sought after, year round destination. It is divided into North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe. The photos that I have posted are from the North side.

The winter in Lake Tahoe is a ski lover’s dream, with so many ski resorts to pick from, you will certainly find your perfect winter getaway and will be flying down those slopes in no time, from anyone of these fantastic resorts.

  • Tahoe Donner
  • Diamond Peak Ski Resort
  • Granlibakken Tahoe
  • Northstar California Resort
  • Sugar Bowl Resort
  • Boreal Mountain Resort
  • Edgewood Tahoe
  • Heavenly Mountain Resort

Just to name a few.

If you want to test your luck at a casino resort, you can find what you are looking for on the Nevada side.

The many, many restaurants will accommodate anyone, with the diverse selection of cuisine, from burgers and fries to five star, white table cloth dining, and everything in between.

Visit in the summer to take advantage of the many beautiful beaches and gorgeous Mountain View’s. Remember to book your stay early due to the large amount of visitors that find their way here every year, to enjoy the crystal clear water and golden sandy beaches.

Whether you are a “warm weather“ person or a “snow up to your knees“ person (or both, if that even exists), you will definitely find your perfect vacation at Lake Tahoe.
